Description

It looks like a fast line moving sinuously through the spaces of Songdo International City, in South Corea; architecture that houses the national museum for the collection, preservation, research, and display of the writing systems of nations around the world. Chosen as an important landmark for the entire community, this open, multi-purpose cultural space acts as an ideal link between the naturalistic and the highly urbanised side of the city.

On the one hand, the building’s horizontality and form embrace Songdo’s Central Park; on the other hand, the museum’s directions dialogue with the bold verticalism of the skyscrapers. The twisting of the building, in itself an urban script, is thus a formal and distributive principle capable of directing the system of flows, the internal layout and the lighting apparatus.

The skylight, in particular, synthesises these suggestions, bringing to the centre the theme of natural light which characterises and shapes every museum space.

Focus

The architectural container anticipates the content of the museum. The sinuous volume of the building interprets - by abstracting it - the creative act of writing.
