The project for the new infant school in Fornacette uses the tools of architecture to respond to the needs and requirements of kids and teachers, with the main purpose of guaranteeing comfort and well-being to its users. The porch is the focal theme of the design concept: it is extended to the whole perimeter of the building, at times appearing as a photovoltaic facade, other times as a sun-shading structure and therefore representing a hybrid device in terms of energetic and environmental potential. The green courtyard and the school vegetable gardens are conceived as educational means to inspire children towards an environmentally conscious behaviour. Inside of the school, a ring-pathway develops around the interior courtyard and encourages moments of gathering and sociality. Recesses and seats inserted by the windows, create a variety of studying options, defining the school as a place for sharing and learning.
