Description

The proposal for the new Science Museum of Rome aims to enhance the potential of the Flaminio district, adding a reference point along Via Guido Reni while restoring a north-south urban porosity by breaking the boundaries of the former military compounds. The project preserves exclusively the oldest steel structure portion of the existing campus, opening a new urban piazza that connects to Villa Flaminia park, re-establishing an active green corridor.

Conceived as a civic reference capable of communicating its vocation: a Forum for sciences and critical thinking, the museum is formed by overlapping layers that represent the scientific method of exploration and research.
The ground floor, with the main entrance and common spaces, merges with the piazzas generating a permeable continuum. The quadruple-height atrium leads to the mezzanine with the permanent exhibition and to the upper floors with temporary exhibitions and interactive areas, ending in the external terraces with stunning views of Rome, bringing visitors back to the start: the criticality of the scientific method.

Designed as a bioclimatic machine, which breathes thanks to the natural ventilation by stack effect generated by the atrium. The double-skin facades offer continuous protection from direct solar radiation and allow generous diffuse daylight through the large windows. The modular structure allows maximum flexibility and future adaptations, according to DfMA and DfD principles.

The new Science Museum is a testament to urban regeneration, adaptive reuse and local circular economy, offering a unique interactive museum experience where visitors are free to create and explore the world of science and its possible interpretations.
