Description
The new Trentino Hospital and University Hub is designed as the cornerstone of the provincial healthcare system, conceived to provide modern, efficient, and locally-integrated medical care. It will serve as the primary site for the clinical, educational, and research functions of the future Trentino Integrated University Hospital Trust, becoming the leading regional and inter-regional center for high-complexity medicine.
The Hub will fulfill a dual role: providing primary care and general hospital services for the local Trento area, while simultaneously hosting highly specialized clinical departments serving the entire province and neighboring regions.
This project does not merely replace the existing Santa Chiara Hospital; it expands its mission. It acts as a clinical, academic, and technological hub that seamlessly integrates healthcare, professional training, and scientific innovation into a single, unified system.
A fundamental pillar of the project is its academic dimension, which transforms the hospital into a true “knowledge campus.” Working in synergy with the University of Trento School of Medicine and the future Research Hub, the complex will be the premier venue for medical and healthcare education, merging teaching facilities, laboratories, and clinical areas.
The proximity and collaboration with the Proton Therapy Center and the Pediatric Hospice complete a healthcare and research ecosystem that is unique in Italy for its quality and density of high-level scientific functions.
Located in Via al Desert, in the southern district of Trento, the site is a strategic junction connecting the established city, the provincial infrastructure, and the ecological corridor of the Fersina stream and the Adige river. Here, the new Hub serves as a hinge between nature and urbanity, bridging the city and the open landscape.
The hospital complex comprises three main buildings: the inpatient ward block, the treatment platform (piastra), and the administration building. These are interconnected via an underground level dedicated to parking, services, and logistics. A central North-South “main street” provides the primary entrance axis, linking the wards and the treatment areas.
The facility will offer approximately 850 beds, with the potential to reach a capacity of 1,000 beds should all inpatient rooms (including isolation units) be utilized as doubles.
